Intermediate guitar lessons are for you if you can already play to a reasonable standard but are stuck in a rut, finding it hard to master more advanced techniques or have bad habits you need to overcome to take your playing to another level.
Most players find that from time to time they reach a plateau where their playing doesn’t improve no matter how much practice they put in. This is a common problem for self-taught players in particular, who may have specific shortcomings in their technique or understanding of music theory that are holding them back and no-one to keep them on track.
Typical areas of weakness include:
- right hand strumming and picking techniques
- basic understanding of chord construction
- barre chords & inversions
- How to practice better set a plan
- Tone & how to get it
My intermediate guitar lessons will help you get rid of your bad habits once and for all so you can progress to the next level in your playing.
Once we’ve corrected any bad habits we’ll move on to developing the improvisation soloing & chord techniques that are going to allow you to make the leap from an OK to a good player.
You’ll learn how to master Solo phrasing, palm muting techniques,scale modes, hammer-ons and pull-offs and more advanced chords. How to play with feeling, master rhythm techniques from light to dark, scream and wail…funky riffs and strums, power chords, blues chugging and licks…we’ll cover it all.
You’ll also learn alternate tunings such as drop D, open G and DAD/GAD so you can play songs in different guitar styles to round out your repertoire. And we’ll do lots of work on more advanced guitar scales and strength, stretching and speed exercises to get you playing like a real pro.
Intermediate Guitar Lesson Prices
Intermediate lessons are £18 for 30 minutes if you want to just dip in. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are great guitar players! So if you’re serious about kicking the bad habits once for all and working on filling in the major gaps in your technique you can pre-book a course of 6 for a 20% discount first time purchase only.
Alternatively, if you really can’t commit to a regular course of lessons then one of my intensive unblocker sessions may be just what you need to home in on the specific wekanesses that are holding you back and develop the practice routines that will allow you to move forward with your playing.
Unblocker sessions cost £55 for 2 hours or £45 for an hour and a half.

Developing your personal signature style and sound
What makes the difference between a good and a great guitar player? It’s all about great technique & feel, my friend…
My advanced guitar lessons are all about building on the individual techniques you’ve already mastered and putting them together in a way that produces your own unique style and sound.
Listen closely to any of the guitar greats and you will find that they all have signature techniques they use but they also add their own little twists and tricks to put their personal stamp on the music.
For example, Eric Clapton, my personal guitar hero, uses these techniques to produce multi-layered music that drips with emotion:
- full tone bends to produce the characteristic wail of blues guitar
- hammer-ons, pull-offs and trills to give his playing fluidity and vibrance
- vibrato (often in combination with deep bends) to give tonality and depth of feeling
- tone and expression from sweet, light and melodic to heavy and raunchy – often in the same song!
- alternating major, minor and blues scales to produce a funky sound.
Jimi Hendrix famously used wah wah pedal & heavy power chord licks, dissonant chords and lots of bends and distortion and dropped tuning to produce his unique sound, fx were a BIG part of his sound
BB King was renowned for the quality of his phrasing and his special butterfly vibrato technique (as well as his signature Gibson guitar, Lucille).
Jimmy Page is the master of dynamic strumming, using a combination of accents, loud or soft strums and a mix of single notes and chords and skipping strums. Other singature Page techniques include the multi hammer-on technique to produce blisteringly fast leads, scale sequences, pull-offs to open strings and arpeggio fingerpicking in pentatonic scales.
Mastering the guitar is a combination of everything coming together as one like glue!
Mastering the guitar for me is a combination of many things finally coming together but for me improvisation is vital soloing freedom & technique is your own guitar personality you and the guitar become one, so to speak. It’s personal to you.
We will work on refining your guitar tone as much as its content.
